Director of Development
Cincinnati Cancer Consortium

Overview
This individual will be the focal point for fundraising for the Cincinnati Cancer Consortium (CCC) involving the College of Medicine (COM), Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) and University Hospital (UH).  The individual is responsible for designing, implementing and managing a comprehensive strategy for identifying, cultivating and successfully soliciting major gift prospects for priority projects assigned to the CCC for cancer-related initiatives.

Structure
The Director of Development for the Cincinnati Cancer Consortium (CCC) is employed by the University of Cincinnati Foundation and has a full-time assignment to the CCC.  This position reports programmatically to the CCC Leadership Team and works collaboratively with the Fundraising Leadership Team of the CCC (which includes key development staff from the University Hospital Foundation, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, the UC Foundation and the chair of the Volunteer Fundraising Advisory Committee) of which the Director is a member.  It reports administratively to the Vice President for Development and Alumni Affairs for the Academic Health Center at the University of Cincinnati.

Specific Duties

  • Plan, implement and manage a work plan for CCC fund-raising efforts, including coordination with the UC Foundation, CCHMC Development and UH Foundation, as well as with Academic Health Center communications, public relations and marketing personnel as needed.

  • Responsible for managing all aspects of fund-raising for strategic initiatives and projects relating to the CCC’s goals for CCHMC, UH and university/COM-wide comprehensive campaign.

  • Work with principal gifts staff of each organization to identify transformational gift prospects for the CCC.

  • Incorporate, as a component of the work plan, a series of active cultivation and solicitation strategies for individual prospects and “suspects” with an emphasis on gifts of $100,000 and above.  Coordinate prospect clearance, report and other activities with the prospect management systems of the UC Foundation, CCHMC Development and UH Foundation through filed contact reports.  These efforts need to be coordinated with CCHMC Development and the UH Foundation for prospects related to those organizations. This work will be carried out in partnership with each respective organization.

  • Manage a portfolio of prospects for the CCC.  Devise and execute strategies for qualifying and cultivating 150-300 assigned prospects for special, major and deferred gifts through in-person solicitations.

  • Recruit members and provide guidance and support to a volunteer committee working to support the fund-raising efforts related to the assigned priority projects of the CCC. 

  • Play a critical role in the recruitment of a chairperson for this volunteer organization. Involve CCHMC Development and UH Foundation in the recruitment process.

  • Coordinate all Planned Gift, Corporation, and Foundation activities with appropriate UC Foundation, CCHMC Development and UH Foundation central staff.

  • Regularly confer with appropriate individuals to update on the status of all major gift prospects and assigned projects.

  • Represent the CCC at functions, events, and meetings.

  • Manage one full-time support staff position and assistant director position at UC Foundation.  Interact with comparable personnel in CCHMC Development and the UH Foundation.

  • Coordinate joint prospect activities with appropriate University Hospital Foundation and CCHMC Development staff.

  • Other development programs and duties as assigned.

Development Office of the CCC
The Office of the Director of Development of the CCC will include two staff (see above) provided by the UC Foundation (COM assessment), as well as coordination with staff in CCHMC Development (assigned to cancer) and the UH Foundation.  The chairperson of the volunteer fundraising committee will also be a part of this office.  Physically, the office will be located at the UC Foundation.

Requirements
Qualifications for this position include a bachelor’s degree (or commensurate education and experience) and at least five to seven years of progressively responsible major gift fund-raising experience.  Special consideration will be given to candidates with medical, cancer or other healthcare fund-raising experience.  Strong ties to the Greater Cincinnati area would be helpful.  Knowledge of gift planning and charitable tax planning techniques are a plus but not required.  Candidates should possess strong written and interpersonal communication skills.  Candidates must be willing to travel as needed.
